The Thief

According to tradition Ryōkan, the hermit zen monk was once visited by a thief. Ryōkan caught him in the act of stealing nothing much and gave him his clothes as a gift. When the thief left, Ryōkan sat naked and watched the moon. “Poor fellow. I wish I could have given him this beautiful moon.” this may have inspired the following haiku by him:

盗人に取り残されし窓の月ぬすっとに とりのこされし まどのつき

nusutto ni / torinokosareshi / mado no tsuki

The thief left it behind:

the moon
